Center of excellence for automotive transmissions of the Chair of Electronic Measurement and Diagnostic Technology

Increasing demands on high performance and emission reduction are competing claims in the automotive world. 

The transmission as a integral part of the automotive powertrain has a major influence on efficiency and the capabilities of a vehicle.

By the development of a center of excellence for automotive transmissions in Berlin we want to contribute to the further improvement of automotive transmissions what might lead to the next-level powertrain.

Besides the current research topics (nonlinear control of clutch and gear shifting systems, wear processes in clutch and gear shifting systems, hybrid modelling) on transmissions we are developing a test bench for automotive transmissions (for passenger cars). On this test bench single and long term measurement cycles should be feasible. Two powerful electrical three-phase machines will realize the push-pull-operation of the test transmission: One drive and one downthrust machine.

Measurement system

The measurement system will be a PXI-System of National Instruments. Drive and downthrust torque sensing shafts, revolution counters, temperature, current and pressure sensors will measure and observe the current system state. System and test bench states will be recorded in parallel to the test cycle. 

System control

The above mentioned PXI-System will control the test cycle. Revolution and torque trajectories which were planned by a graphical matlab user interface should be the basis the test cycles. Even unattended test cycles should be possible. Global security strategies will be realized by the PXI-System so that the whole system  will be shut down after a failure and will remain in a secure state.  

Communication with drivetrain control unit

For a realistic test process the original drivetrain control unit will be integrated into the test environment by a PXI-CAN-system.  By this a simulation of the remaining vehicle bus system should be feasible.
